Burk Uzzle

Burk Uzzle (b. 1950) lives and works in eastern North Carolina. In the 1970s and 1980s, Burk was an active contributor to the evolution of Magnum Photos and served as its President in 1979 and 1980. While affiliated with Magnum, he produced the iconic image that graced the Woodstock record album cover as well as important images documenting the tense and emotional days following the assassination of Dr. MLK. His Magnum-era work also poignantly illustrated what it meant to be an outsider - from Cambodian war refugees to disenfranchised populations without voice to portraits of rural, unmapped communities across the world.

Burk’s archives span more than six decades and capture much of the history of analog and digital photography. And though he has photographed every corner of the country, and indeed much of the world, Burk’s photographic journeys have only reinforced his interest in the people and locations closer to home.
