David Wharton
David Wharton is a self-taught photographer living and working in Mississippi. He has served as the Director of Documentary Studies and Assistant Professor of Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi's Center for the Study of Southern Culture since 1999. Previously, he worked as a photojournalist for the Willamette Valley Observer in Eugene, Oregon and taught at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Moving to a small town in Mississippi inspired Wharton to explore and find the relationship between what a place looked like and what it meant to those who inhabited it. Wharton published his first book, The Soul of a Small Texas Town: Photographs, Memories, and History, in 2000. His photographs have been exhibited throughout the United States, Latin America and Europe.
