David Wharton

David Wharton (1947-2022) was a self-taught Mississippi-based photographer. He served as the Director of Documentary Studies and Assistant Professor of Southern Studies at the University of Mississippi's Center for the Study of Southern Culture from 1999 until his passing in 2022. Previously, he worked as a photojournalist for the Willamette Valley Observer in Eugene, Oregon and taught at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Moving to a small town in Mississippi inspired Wharton to explore and find the relationship between what a place looked like and what it meant to those who inhabited it. Wharton published his first book, The Soul of a Small Texas Town: Photographs, Memories, and History, in 2000. He published three more award-winning books in his lifetime. His photographs have been exhibited throughout the United States, Latin America and Europe.
