Vanessa Winship
Vanessa Winship (b. 1960) is a London-based photographer and educator. A member of Agence Vu photo agency, Winship’s work focuses on regions associated with a recent past of instability and volatility and explores the changing nature of borders, identity, and history. Long-term projects have brought her to places like the Balkans, Turkey, Belgrade, Athens, Istanbul, and the United States.
Winship has been honored with many awards, including World Press Photo (Amsterdam); the National Portrait Gallery Prize (London); and, in 2011, the Henri Cartier Bresson Award (Paris), making her the first woman ever to do so. After winning the HCB award, Winship undertook a photographic exploration of the United States against a backdrop of an economic depression and fading promises of the American Dream. Her work resides in the permanent collections of the Hermès, Neuflize Vie, Henri Cartier Bresson Foundation, Elton John Collection, Nelson Atkins Museum, Fundacion Mapfre, and the Tate Britain.
