William Christenberry
William Christenberry (1936–2016) was an American artist renowned for his color photographs of his home-place of Hale County, Alabama. His still images, made with a Kodak Brownie and a large-format camera, live alongside other media in his practice, including painting and sculpture. All taken together, Christenberry's art speaks to themes of memory and place, which is especially evident in his photographs of rural decaying structures.
Considered a pioneer in fine art color photography, Christenberry's work appears in several monographs, including most recently William Christenberry (2006). He is also collected by revered institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York); the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York); the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, DC); the George Eastman House (Rochester); and the High Museum of Art (Atlanta), to name a few.
