Mark Maio
Mark Maio (b. 1955) is a commercial, fine art, and ophthalmic photographer residing in Atlanta. In 1999, after working in clinical, medical, and ophthalmic photography for over 25 years, he developed the first high resolution digital imaging system in ophthalmology. Maio’s teaching career has included posts at Emory University, the State University of New York at Buffalo as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, and the Rochester Institute of Technology as an Adjunct Professor of Photography in the Biomedical Photography program. His work as an entrepreneur of his own business, InVision, attracted the attention of Adobe’s Biomedical Imaging Advisory Group in 2006. Maio’s work with Adobe launched the first ever version of the Photoshop Extended software that focused on scientific, medical, and digital imaging tools.
Apart from his science-related interests, Maio has also produced bodies of work in the documentary tradition, like his 16-year-long project, Against The Grain, in which he followed the remnants of the US grain industry. A portion of his Against The Grain series was purchased by the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film for their permanent collection.
